We continue to hear about companies upset that AI giants are scraping their data without consent. While I understand their worries, I keep thinking, “Well, it’s public content.” As usual, there are two sides to the coin.

According to an ex-employee of Nvidia who shared the information with 404 Media, the company has been accused of scraping millions of online videos to train its artificial intelligence systems, such as Omniverse 3D, self-driving car technology, and Digital Humans avatars. This has raised many ethical and legal questions about using this type of data for commercial purposes. Although Ming-Yu Liu from Nvidia reportedly said their higher-ups allowed them to do so, there are still worries.

So, is this just another big step forward, or should it be considered a significant ethical violation? While it’s hard to say if what Nvidia did is entirely legal or not, one thing we know for sure is that people are racing towards AI domination faster than ever before. The fact that Nvidia used huge libraries full of internet videos shows how desperate companies can get when trying to innovate and stay on top. It also exemplifies yet again the constant struggle between rapid technological progress and having clear rules laid out ahead of time concerning where limits should be placed during the creation process for any new tech, which could potentially have severe impacts on society down the line, such as Artificial Intelligence.

Cool Tech: Figure Robot 2.0

I love robots so much. I’ve been obsessed with them my entire life. I continue to believe that having more robots in our daily lives is a good thing. They should do the work we do not want to do. Meet Figure 2.0.

The new Figure 02 humanoid robot has just been unveiled! Building on its predecessor, Figure 02 features neatly tucked-away wires, signaling a shift from the prototyping phase to a more refined production model. With six onboard cameras giving it a comprehensive view of its surroundings and hands equipped with 10 fingers and 16 degrees of freedom, this robot boasts human-like strength, capable of lifting up to 25kg (55 pounds). The enhanced battery pack now delivers over 50% more energy, extending its runtime beyond the original five hours.

Figure has also partnered with OpenAI to bring conversational capabilities to the robot, allowing it to interact seamlessly with people using built-in speakers and microphones. Plus, a collaboration with BMW means these robots are being tested in automobile manufacturing, paving the way for exciting applications in the industry. The advancements in Figure 02 highlight the thrilling progress in robotics, making it a standout in an increasingly crowded field of humanoid robots. The future of robotics is here, and it’s fascinating!

My take: If everyone is so upset that AI giants are scraping the internet for free and doing what they want with the results, you may as well collect millions for your likeness if you can. I would.

My take: You would think Google would crush everyone with the amount of users and data they have from Search, Ads, Business Manager, Maps, and Gmail. And yet, each announcement feels a little lackluster. Why?

My take: So, OpenAI creates a system for people to track the content created by OpenAI. Couldn’t they also create something that “beats” detectors, serves both sides of the market, and makes a ton of money?

My take: Disclaimer: I do NOT want anyone to lose their job. That said, fast food workers, bank tellers, and grocery employees are probably the first people to be replaced by technology. Where there is a ton of smoke, there is fire.
