🚨 Unpopular opinion: AI will maybe, probably take your job

AI is moving quickly, and with that comes the inevitable…it will replace people at work. I have publicly talked about this on Twitter and my podcast for years. In fact, I have never gotten more backlash than when discussing this exact topic.

Honestly, I thought it would be robots replacing warehouse workers and screens replacing fast-food and bank workers.

Let’s break down the latest hot news stories.

🔗 AI systems like ChatGPT could impact 300 million full-time jobs worldwide, with administrative and legal roles some of the most at risk, Goldman Sachs report says

The report, written by Joseph Briggs and Devesh Kodnani, said that roughly two-thirds of current jobs are exposed to some degree of AI automation, while generative AI could substitute up to a quarter of current work.

If you’ve used ChatGPT, you know that this is probably true.

ChatGPT can write great content, copyedit existing copy, write and deploy code, and with the release of ChatGPT plugins—it’s open to the internet and can do everything.

I have used ChatGPT to write amazing code. I have used ChatGPT to organize five pages of notes. Not only does it do it well, but it also does it instantly. ChatGPT doesn’t get tired. It doesn’t go to the bathroom. And I don’t even have to worry about ChatGPT’s feelings when I have it re-do work.

Oh, by the way, I’m talking about one tool in a sea of tools.

My friend Rowan put together a giant list of AI tools for anything you need AI to do.

🔗 ChatGPT will most likely impact your job if you work in tech, went to college, and make up to $80,000 a year, research says

  • Most American jobs are at risk of being impacted by AI like ChatGPT, researchers found.

  • Educated, white-collar workers making up to $80,000 a year will be most affected by AI, per the study.

In case you were wondering which jobs were most affected, here is some information from the study.

Jobs in the "information processing industries," like IT, are most exposed to generative AI, while jobs in "manufacturing, agriculture and mining" are the least exposed. That's because roles that use "programming and writing skills" are most in-line with GPT's capabilities.

Some of the jobs listed as "occupations with highest exposure" include tech jobs like blockchain engineers; data-heavy roles like mathematicians, financial quantitative analysts, accountants, and tax preparers; and communication careers such as writers, public relations specialists, interpreters and translators, poets, and lyricists.

For the record, I don’t get some weird joy out of talking about people being replaced by AI. I also believe in seeing something happening and calling it like it is. This will happen.

According to layoffs.fyi, 164,411 people in tech were laid off in 2022. 168,243 have already been laid off in 2023—and it’s only April. These are the biggest companies on Earth, and they probably realize they have the infrastructure to build and scale with AI while saving a ton of money on headcount.

Am I replacing people at my company with AI? Absolutely not. But we have found multiple ways to include this technology in our daily workflows, and it has slowed down some of our future hiring plans.

Here are the AI tools we have used this week alone (probably more I am not even thinking about):

🚪 At some point, all jobs evolve.

Long story short - significant changes are coming to the workforce. Make yourself AI-proof by learning to use AI to do your job better. I’ve been saying this is coming for years, by the way. Check the dates on these tweets.

Agree with me? Think I’m nuts? Both? Tweet me at @greenbaumly, and let me know what you think.
