One Big Story: Siri’s AI Glow-Up? Don’t Hold Your Breath

Yikes. Remember when Apple promised a game-changing, AI-powered Siri? It turns out that we might be waiting until at least 2027 for a true, modernized version. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, while Apple plans to roll out a new LLM-powered Siri upgrade in iOS 18.5, it’ll essentially be a band-aid fix—still separate from the old, clunky Siri we’ve all learned to tolerate. The real transformation, where Siri can fluidly handle both basic tasks (like setting reminders) and advanced AI-powered actions (like understanding app context), was supposed to arrive in iOS 19.4. But Apple is behind schedule and won’t be ready for WWDC in June.

Meanwhile, Apple’s AI division is dealing with some serious turbulence. Reports say their models are hitting performance limits, they’re struggling to get the AI training hardware they need, and leadership issues are driving talent to competitors. In other words, Siri’s still playing catch-up while OpenAI, Google, and even Amazon (despite its own Alexa struggles) keep pushing forward.

Key Takeaways:

  • A real AI-powered Siri might not arrive until iOS 20 in 2027—years behind schedule.

  • The upcoming iOS 18.5 update will introduce an LLM-powered Siri, but it’ll still rely on outdated architecture.

  • Apple’s AI division is dealing with hardware shortages, leadership problems, and talent leaving for competitors.

My Take: Apple is falling behind in the AI race, and it’s not a great look. Siri was supposed to be a pioneer in voice assistants, but it’s been stagnant for years. If Apple doesn’t solve its AI challenges soon, Siri might become the Blackberry of voice assistants—left in the dust while competitors surge ahead.

Cool Tech: Opera’s AI-Powered Browser Just Took a Big Leap

Opera is shaking up the browser game with Browser Operator, an AI agent that can actually do things for you—not just display web pages. This marks a huge shift toward agentic browsing, where AI handles tasks like shopping, research, and more, all inside the browser.

Why It’s a Big Deal:

  • AI does the work – Tell it what you need (e.g., “Find me pink Nike running shoes in size 8.5”), and it’ll handle it.

  • Fast & Private – Runs natively inside the browser, so it’s quicker and doesn’t rely on cloud servers.

  • Game-Changer for Productivity – Instead of just showing web pages, Opera’s browser now acts on your behalf.

My Take: This is a glimpse into the future of browsing—AI assistants baked directly into our browsers. If it works as promised, Opera just set the bar for the next wave of web innovation.
