Cool Tech: IKEA AI-Powered Drones

To automate inventory in further distribution centers in Europe and North America, IKEA will use AI-powered drones more than ever. Perryville in the US is the first among them. These drones were created using Verity’s technology; they can recognize items using AI and take pictures of them even when shelves are very high or other obstacles are on their way. The company expects to achieve real-time stock checks that will be smooth for daily work and not interrupt it anyhow so that personnel can do more important things while reducing physical load simultaneously. And that’s the win! AI and robots allowing humans to do more meaningful work is hopefully our future.

IKEA decided to develop this system further after it had been successfully tested in Belgium. The drone also conducts rack inspections besides flying around warehouses and collecting images. However, all these features are analytics-driven ones that help optimize operations within a warehouse rather than improve customer service outside of it. According to Verity CEO, over 250 such devices have already been deployed across 73 different locations worldwide, which shows how much emphasis IKEA puts on using modern technologies for its business process optimization and better workplace organization.
