(Read time: five minutes) - Fun fact: I never change this.
Next step, Terminator?
In an unusual twist, about 50% of the personnel at OpenAI working on the long-term dangers of superAI have departed from this organization in the past few months. This includes essential individuals such as Jan Leike and cofounder John Schulman, as indicated by Daniel Kokotajlo, a former OpenAI employee. These resignations beg the question of whether OpenAI is downgrading safety to accelerate product development and commercialization.
OpenAI has always been vocal about AGI safety. However, the recent talent exodus hints at a change of guard. Former employee Kokotajlo, who left in April 2024, suggested that OpenAI may be inching closer to creating AGI but is ill-equipped to deal with the aftermath. This change in focus has created a ‘chilling effect’ on the AGI safety research within the company as commercial interests come to the fore.
Such a trend of resignations is observed as OpenAI is criticized for its position on California’s SB1047 to regulate AI development effectively. In his comments, Kokotajlo lamented OpenAI's shift of position, which had supported the bill that sought to regulate AI, stating it was no longer faithful to its promises on AGI safety.
OpenAI may state that it endeavors to offer secure AI systems. However, recent reorganizations and personalities rescinding support indicate that the zeal or motivation behind some of the founders' activities may dissolve into something more commercially inclined.

Cool Tech: ALERTCalifornia Program
We need more stuff like THIS when it comes to AI innovation. I have been asking the universe for something like this for years and have proof!
The AI fire detection tool conceived by ALERTCalifornia, CAL FIRE, and Digital Path has been included in TIME magazine’s list of best inventions of the Year 2023. This tool transforms firefighting techniques by detecting and notifying firefighters of the occurrence of fires even before they can spread.
This AI, connected to more than 1,050 cameras stationed across California, notifies the relief responders within a few minutes of the precise location of the emergency. Such prompt emergency notification is critical for keeping wildfires in check, as was exemplified in a recent incident near Grass Valley in which the AI raised an alarm about a fire site more than 40 minutes prior to the first 911 call.
This AI tool improves California's wildfire resiliency by getting smarter and better over time.
Badass.
Oh yeah, here’s me in 2020:
Perhaps someone that knows more about this can explain it - how on Earth do we not have some sort of system that detects wildfires and deploys drones to put out fires early in the process before they spread. This seems like a billion-dollar idea, right? What are we waiting for?
