Happy Birthday, America! We have a big newsletter for you today—enjoy!
OpenAI has developed CriticGPT, a model based on GPT-4, designed to catch errors in ChatGPT’s code output. It’s pretty amusing that ChatGPT has essentially created something to fix its own mistakes! Their experiments found that people who used CriticGPT to review ChatGPT’s code performed better 60% of the time compared to those without assistance. CriticGPT is being integrated into the Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF) pipeline to help trainers evaluate advanced AI systems more accurately.
CriticGPT was trained with RLHF by having trainers insert deliberate mistakes into code and then critiquing those errors. This training method allowed CriticGPT to become adept at identifying both artificially introduced and naturally occurring bugs. The results showed that critiques from Human+CriticGPT teams were preferred over those from unassisted humans more than 60% of the time. While CriticGPT offers many benefits, such as writing more comprehensive critiques with fewer hallucinations, it still faces limitations, particularly with complex and lengthy tasks. Despite these challenges, the research indicates that CriticGPT holds promise in improving RLHF data quality, and there are plans to scale and implement this work further.
