(Read time: five minutes) - Fun fact: I never change this.

I’ve been actively worried about deepfakes and AI causing hell during the US election season, and it has arrived in the least shocking fashion you could imagine. Before I share the video, let me post a disclaimer that I am NOT choosing sides in this election, nor will I ever push for a specific candidate in this newsletter.

A deepfake video of US presidential candidate and current US Vice President Kamala Harris was created and circulated online. Many believed it was real.

I am sharing this for educational purposes!

It got weird when Elon Musk, owner of X, shared the video with his 192.2M followers and did not indicate that it was fake. I’d like to believe he was fully aware it was not real.

Personal feelings about all of this aside, this is a good reminder of how simple it will be to share deepfakes online. Yikes.

Startup PromoTix ($48M in traction) is saving the events industry

PromoTix is solving the event industry’s challenges around high ticket fees and low attendance. Ticketmaster and competitors charge up to 40% of the ticket price to book, deterring guests who can’t afford the added cost. Combined with a crowded marketing space, events struggle.

PromoTix is raising funds to expand. Already profitable, with 656k users and $48M in sales in its first 30 months, PromoTix has low-fee and no-fee SaaS pricing, as well as patented marketing tools that drive attendance.

Cool Tech: Midjourney 6.1 Arrives

I love Midjourney. If I’m in a creative void, I will enter Midjourney and create the weirdest images possible. Well, good news for all of you AI artists: Midjourney 6.1 has arrived!

What’s new?

- More coherent images (arms, legs, hands, bodies, plants, animals, etc)

- Much better image quality (reduced pixel artifacts, enhanced textures, skin, 8bit retro, etc)

- More precise, detailed, and correct small image features (eyes, small faces, far away hands, etc)

- New upscalers with much better image / texture quality

- Roughly 25% faster for standard image jobs

- Improved text accuracy (when drawing words via “quotations” in prompts)

- A new personalization model with improved nuance, surprise, and accuracy

- Personalization code versioning (use any personalization code from old jobs to use the personalization model and data from that job)

- A new ``--q 2`` mode which takes 25% longer to (sometimes) add more texture at the cost of reduced image coherence

- Things should look “generally more beautiful” across the board
