(Read time: five minutes) - Fun fact: I never change this.

OpenAI has seen a string of high-profile departures over the past year, but the most recent and perhaps most significant is Mira Murati, the company’s Chief Technology Officer. Murati’s exit follows the earlier departures of key figures like Bob McGrew (Chief Research Officer) and Ilya Sutskever (Co-founder & Chief Scientist), along with VP of Research Barrett Zoph and Jan Leike, co-lead of the Superalignment initiative. While those exits were already concerning, Murati’s departure is pivotal for OpenAI.

Key Takeaways:

  • Mira Murati, the most recent executive to leave, was pivotal in shaping OpenAI's technology and strategy.

  • The earlier departures of McGrew, Sutskever, Zoph, and Leike have compounded the leadership gap at OpenAI.

  • Murati’s exit raises questions about OpenAI's future direction and ability to maintain its innovative edge.

  • Sam Altman has downplayed the losses, but this latest exit suggests deeper challenges within the company.

My Take: Mira Murati's leaving is a bigger signal than all the previous departures combined. She’s been at the helm of some of OpenAI’s most groundbreaking work, and losing her could mean a significant shift in their trajectory. While Altman tries to spin these exits as usual, Murati’s departure is a clear sign that OpenAI might face some real internal challenges. We'll link to her letter for full context, but it’s clear that this story is just beginning.

Cool Tech: Meta’s Orion Glasses

Meta has just revealed Orion, the most advanced AR glasses to date. Previously known as Project Nazare, Orion seamlessly combines the look of regular glasses with cutting-edge augmented reality capabilities. Years of breakthroughs in modern computing have gone into this, and it shows.

Key Takeaways:

  • Orion blends physical and digital worlds, putting immersive AR into a stylish, wearable form.

  • It’s designed to let users stay connected and present without choosing between the two.

  • Orion integrates powerful contextual AI to anticipate and address your needs, all while allowing users to see each other's eyes and expressions.

My Take: Orion is more than just a cool gadget—it’s a glimpse into how we’ll live in the future. It’s about fully engaging with the physical world while having the digital at our fingertips. The potential for hands-free interaction, AI integration, and immersive holographic experiences makes this a game-changer. Meta is pushing boundaries here, and it feels like we’re finally stepping into the true era of AR. The future is here, and it’s on our faces. I want these.

My take: I know that most artists aren’t fans of AI art, but art is art, and I am so excited about this. Dataland will use millions of photos and other records from partners, including the Smithsonian and London’s Natural History Museum, to create its installations. I will share photos when I go!

My take: OpenAI, founded initially as a non-profit, is restructuring into a for-profit benefit corporation, allowing CEO Sam Altman to receive equity and making the company more appealing to investors. This shift from its non-profit roots has raised concerns and is reportedly a key reason behind the departure of several top executives, including Mira Murati and Greg Brockman.

My take: In the future, everything will be AI! Visa said Featurespace's AI-enabled solutions would help its clients manage fraud in real time. In July, Visa said it prevented 80 million fraudulent transactions worth $40 billion globally last year thanks to investments in AI.

My take: It feels like AI will find cures for all of the diseases, solve all of life’s mysteries, and discover everything we’ve missed for a long time.
