(Read time: five minutes) - Fun fact: I never change this.

The Biden-Harris Administration is taking bold steps to ensure the United States remains at the forefront of AI innovation. In a recent White House roundtable, top officials met with leaders from AI companies, hyperscalers, datacenter operators, and utility companies to discuss strategies for developing large-scale AI infrastructure in the US.

Key Takeaways:

  • The focus is on meeting clean energy, permitting, and workforce requirements for AI datacenters.

  • The initiative aims to create good-paying jobs and keep energy costs low for consumers.

  • A new Task Force on AI Datacenter Infrastructure will coordinate policy across government agencies.

New Actions Announced:

  1. Scaled-up technical assistance for datacenter permitting at federal, state, and local levels.

  2. Department of Energy is creating an AI data center engagement team to support development.

  3. Exploring opportunities to repurpose closed coal sites for datacenter development.

  4. US Army Corps of Engineers to expedite construction of eligible AI datacenters.

Our Take: This push for AI infrastructure development in the US is a significant move to maintain technological leadership. Seeing the focus on clean energy and job creation alongside AI advancement is encouraging. However, the success of these initiatives will depend on effective collaboration between the government and private sector and overcoming potential regulatory hurdles.

Cool Tech: Adobe Firefly Text-To-Video

Adobe is set to revolutionize video creation with its upcoming Firefly-powered AI tools. The software giant recently previewed features that allow users to generate video clips from text descriptions or still images, with options to adjust camera angles and motion.

Key highlights:

  • Text-to-video and image-to-video generation (limited to 5 seconds)

  • "Generative Extend" feature for Premiere Pro to lengthen existing footage

  • Adobe claims Firefly is "commercially safe," trained on licensed content

  • Initial release as a standalone beta app, with future Creative Cloud integration

Our Take: Adobe's entry into AI-generated video could be a game-changer for content creators. The promise of "commercially safe" content may alleviate copyright concerns, but the 5-second limit could be restrictive. As these tools evolve, they will reshape video production workflows and democratize filmmaking.

Latest News

My take: My unpopular opinion is that anything and everything you post online is considered public, and you should expect that it’s being used for data, advertising, and training AI.

My take: As AI models become more sophisticated, we’ll need to worry more and more about their capabilities and, of course, how smart we let them get on their own.

My take: Oddly enough, I have long felt that AI and automation would affect many blue- and white-collar jobs. Truck drivers felt pretty safe, in my estimation, but here we are.

My take: Why is this so important? In New York City alone, it’s estimated that one out of every 200 window cleaners dies yearly. Up to 30 serious injuries occur annually among window cleaners in the UK.

Today’s Tip: How AI Helped Me Make a Perfect Dinner

My wife and I are planning a trip to Rome in November. We have been watching social media videos of Italian food and decided we wanted to make a dish. Instead of boxed pasta, I said, “We should find somewhere to buy freshly made pasta.” I could Google it, but I would be combing through ads, maps, and wrong answers. So I opened Perplexity and searched, “Where can I buy fresh pasta to cook near Newport Beach, CA?”

It gave me a few answers, but the first one was absolutely correct.

I had never been to Bristol Farms, but I live close. This was early on Sunday, so I wanted to know when they opened. I was able to ask this follow-up question in the same chat with Perplexity.

Perfect. They opened early. Now, we needed to know what to buy to make the perfect linguine and clams.

We got the right ingredients and made it exactly as the instructions said. Dinner came out amazing, but it’s not our best plating work.
