Cool Tech: Waymo's Safety Data Shows Promising Results
Above, I shared how OpenAI’s new model is more intelligent than the average human. Well, it appears that autonomous vehicles are better drivers than we are.
Waymo, a leader in autonomous vehicle technology, has released comprehensive safety data for its self-driving cars. The data, which covers 22 million rider-only miles through June 2024, indicates that the Waymo Driver is outperforming human drivers in key safety metrics:
26% fewer airbag deployment crashes
46% fewer injury-causing crashes
48% fewer police-reported crashes
These reductions are most pronounced in San Francisco, where Waymo vehicles had 29% fewer injury-causing crashes than human benchmarks.
The company emphasizes transparency by sharing detailed crash data and methodologies, allowing for independent analysis. Waymo acknowledges the challenges in directly comparing autonomous and human-driven vehicles, citing differences in crash reporting requirements and definitions.
Waymo focuses on injury-causing crashes to ensure fair comparisons and calculates incident rates per million miles driven. The data is regularly updated in line with NHTSA's Standing General Order reporting timelines.
While these results are encouraging, Waymo cautions that the data doesn't definitively prove their vehicles are safer than human drivers in all conditions. The company continues to refine its methodologies and invites further research to advance AV safety science.
